In Assignment 3, you have the option of watching the movie and sharing your impressions, so I thought it only fair that I do the same. So you get some of my impressions as I saw the movie.
The music! YESSS. WHAT! That's LotR Bilbo! HE's not in the book!? (Lulled into story ...) oh LOOK there is Erebor.. beautiful. Dale is gorgeous too. Did that woman have a BEARD? Must be a oh wow DWARF woman? (Flash of memory -- Gimli's "It's the Dwarves that go swimming, with little hairy women") The dragon comes! The kite burns. All burn. <_< Smaug has taken over.
It's GANDALF! at the Shire? Ah, he sees Bilbo for the first time. Fireworks!
Back to Bilbo, by now am used to the idea that Sir Ian Holmes is here. WHAT THE ..asldkfjasldjf there's FRODO. AwwwWWW. IT'S FRODO! Overwhelmed - miss some dialogue. The party from LotR is 'now'/today? Those are the same clothes Frodo met Gandalf in!
Bilbo sits on bench smoking, blowing smoke rings and .... it switches to Bilbo of 60 years previous. That was well done. :) And here comes Gandalf again. How clever. They had put the rest of the title in NOW, because NOW the actual book starts. Yes, yes, that is good. <333 Gandalf. I wonder how Martin Freeman will do as Bilbo? It's good to see more Shire!
The tension mounts. I know what is coming next ... BALIN arrives and there goes Bilbo's tidy life POOF but he doesn't know it yet * eg *. All the Dwarves (and Gandalf) are there but where is Thorin?
Party time! Wow, they are really getting into the food... literally. Look at Bilbo running around! HA! This is excellent. They HAVE BLUNT THE KNIVES! They are singing. Oh wow oh wow. Following the book!
WHAT. Thorin arrives now? The whole mood changes, this is not how it is in the book ... hmm. Thorin is not a part of the 'merry group' what? Okay, now movie follows book. They did the Misty Mountain song. Wow Thorin has a voice.
The ponies/horses look funny. They aren't right. New Zealand is sure beautiful. Holy shit, look at Azog. I don't remember him from the book. :o Thorin! Thorin!
THE TROLLS! YES! Well done. :D Radagast? What? This is new. I don't know if I like .. oh. This is good! Wow, Radagast is a badass dude. Bunny drawn sleigh! WHEEE! GRRR. The dead king.
Frodo Bilbo gets STING!
No way, the Dwarves weren't chased by Orcs and Wargs here in the book. Gandalf followed a path marked by little white stones. Oh, this is good, they follow a ravine to .... Rivendell. *sigh*
Wait. The Elves in the book were silly and singing as the Dwarves came into the valley, greeting the Company and welcoming them. This is quite different. ELROND. Yes yes.
The Dwarves are throwing food around? In Rivendell? Quite a difference here from the book, but it works okay. Thorin sure has a chip on his shoulder in the movie. He's much more grumpy and REALLY doesn't like the Elves, even if they are helping him. Dork. Can't he tell that Elrond is not like the Wood-Elves?
Galadriel. She was NOT in the book. Cate Blanchett is so great though. Saruman? WHAT? This did NOT happen. Grrrr Oh, interesting. They are tying in the events of LotR with The Hobbit, making it darker and more serious. Suddenly this is not just a quest of the Dwarves wanting to get their gold back.
Thunderbattle. THAT is well done. What? Bilbo didn't start to leave the Dwarves in the cave! NOOOooooo. That is wrong! GoblinTown! And singing! PSH PSH that is one ugly ugly really well done Great Goblin. Bilbo and Gollum. The finding of the Ring of Power. *sigh* Well done. Bilbo's 'pity' and not killing Gollum. Very well done. YES!
Now that is interesting ... Bilbo saying why he returned. Totally not in the book. Absolutely not in the book BUT it sure adds to the depth of the story. Wargs and ORCS. Damn, there is Azog again. He looks so evil. ...
What? Gandalf didn't send a butterfly to the Eagles! The Lord of the Eagles saw the events happening and came of his own choice and will! But aren't they beautiful. :)
Awwww. Thorin realizes Bilbo is brave and courageous (and of use after all). Awwwww
